Royal New Zealand Ballet

Romeo and Juliet - 8/9 August

The world’s most famous love story returns to the stage.
Christopher Hampson’s exquisite ballet version of Romeo and Juliet was first performed by the Royal New Zealand Ballet in 2003 and, following a hugely successful UK tour, was nominated for a Laurence Oliver Award for Best Production in 2005.
Set to Sergei Prokofiev’s ravishing score, this highly dramatic and visually stunning production is inspired by the look of Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and Baz Luhrmann’s film version of this Shakespearean masterpiece.

Director Michael Hurst and mezzo - soprano Helen Medlyn (who plays both witch and mother) are Arts Foundation Laureates. Two rising stars, soprano Ana James and mezzo-soprano Anna Pierard, play Gretel and Hansel respectively.
